The International Academy of Strategic Management

The Activities of IASM

The major activities of IASM consist of the following: research meetings, publication of journals, a national convention, and mutual exchange and collaboration with foreign and domestic organizations.

1. Research Meetings

A) Theoretical Research Meetings

The research meetings are the most important building blocks of IASM on which other activities are to be developed in combination. Three types of activities are devised for this purpose. The first type of activity is the "theoretical research meeting." While this type of meeting is rather common at many academic institutions, IASM introduced various measures to provide young researchers with opportunities to develop their skills in writing papers, presenting them at various academic meetings including IASM’s national convention, and submitting them to journals.
The existing research meetings and their corresponding fields are shown in TABLE 1.

The second type of activity is the "practical research meeting," which explores solutions to topical problems that businesses are trying to resolve. Practical research meetings are different from theoretical research meetings in that priority is not placed on how to write good papers but on how to resolve real and urgent problems. There are three practical research meetings as shown in TABLE 2.

2. Publication of Journals

Two types of journals will be published from next fiscal year. One is an ordinary academic journal which contains refereed papers. It will consist of papers written in English or Japanese, and published as a printed journal. In addition, the English papers published in this journal will also be published as an electronic journal.

The other is a practical journal that introduces practical cases of various business activities or proposals of solutions to problems businesses are facing. This practical journal is expected to contribute to the resolution of real problems as well as the promotion of mutual understanding between academics and practitioners. This journal will also be published both as a printed journal and electronically.

3. National Convention

A national convention will be held annually around September during which both theoretical and practical papers (and reports) will be presented and discussed. The convention will run for two days at the university that is in charge of convening that year.

4. Exchange with Other Organizations

IASM intends to develop extensive networks with both domestic and foreign research organizations. Communication through the journals and research meetings will contribute to this purpose.

IASM will also strive to promote joint research with both domestic and foreign research organizations and actively engage in submitting policy proposals concerning various issues based on those activities.
